Wallet Document Types
Understanding the different wallet document types supported via the Digital Credentials API for identity verification.
Overview
The Digital Credentials API enables web applications to request identity documents stored in mobile wallets like Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Aho supports four standardized document types, each designed for different use cases and jurisdictions.
Mobile Driver's License (mDL)
org.iso.18013.5.1.mDL
The mobile Driver's License is the most widely deployed wallet document type in the US, now accepted at TSA checkpoints nationwide.↗ Issued by state DMVs, it provides a digital version of the physical driver's license stored in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. mDL is the only document type that includes driving-specific information and physical characteristics.
Best for: Age verification (21+ for alcohol, tobacco), car rental and driving verification, identity verification in the US, and TSA PreCheck / airport security.

Best for: General identity verification, age verification, non-drivers needing ID, and state ID cards.

Auto-Selection Logic
When creating a verification request, if you don't specify accepted document types, the system automatically
selects document types that support all of your required claims. For example, requesting
driving_privileges will only accept mDL
since it's the only document type with that claim.
